Preventing and Caring for Your Dogs Teeth

Preventing and caring for your dogs teeth relies on you to help the vet with his/her dental care. Brushing can be a special time for you and your dog. It cleans his teeth and gums and prevents gum diseases from developing. The AAHA recommends regular oral examinations and dental cleanings. Most veterinarians suggest toothpastes that include both chlorhexidine (an antiseptic) and sodium hexametaphosphate (which fights tartar).
A basic oral exam can be performed while your dog is awake. A complete exam or thorough cleaning requires a short-lasting anesthetic to make your dog comfortable. Oral disease is the number one health problem that is diagnosed in dogs.
Therefore, it is important to get your dog adequate dental care professionally by a veterinarian. Although dogs very rarely get cavities, they are quite prone to gum disease and tartar build up on the teeth. Food particles and bacteria can collect and become lodged below the gum line which results in plaque. Thankfully, there are several ways to keep your pets teeth healthy.
